Online Resources When Preparing For GAMSAT

Preparing for the GAMSAT can be really difficult, especially if you have a full time job or family commitments. Fortunately there are lots of online resources available to help ease your journey. So I have compiled a short list of free resources to assist with your preparation.

One of the biggest mistakes students make is thinking that preparing for the GAMSAT is when you realize you're only a month away from the GAMSAT and then you start cramming in as much studying as you can.

It is imperative that students spend adequate time preparing for the GAMSAT. We recommend a lead time of 5 to 7 months prior to the GAMSAT exam. Preparing for the GAMSAT involves studying for the questions, building up an understanding of the content, and practising as much as you can.

We’ve all been there, sitting at our desk with a pile of GAMSAT books and procrastinating your GAMSAT revision. It feels like such a waste! But it doesn’t have to be that way! Here are our lists of online GAMSAT resources for your preparation that we recommend:

Official ACER GAMSAT

The ACER website is a good place to start, it has information about the exam, timelines and sample questions.

There are also other online resources such as:

  • GAMSAT for Dummies by John Ewing (published in 2016)
  • GAMSAT Practice Tests 2nd edition by Baha Waihong and Michael Ogden (published in 2017)

Using Chemwiki To Prepare For GAMSAT

Chemwiki is an open educational resource with information about chemistry, biochemistry and chemical engineering. ChemWiki has a section on organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry. It also has links to other resources such as Wikipedia, Mendeley and Google Scholar.

The Examkrackers 10th Edition

The Examkrackers 10th Edition is a good resource for those who would like to get the most out of their time before taking the GAMSAT.

It has a lot of information about the test and goes over sample questions and answers, giving you an idea of what kinds of questions will be on the exam.

It also includes advice on how to prepare for the test, including which sections are harder than others and how you can improve your scores in those areas.

Finally, there is an entire section dedicated to writing essays for Section 2, which will help you write better essays than those who don't read this book

Much of the content in Griffith GAMSAT review and Ace GAMSAT are pulled from this book.

Passive Preparation For The GAMSAT

Passive preparation for the GAMSAT focuses on developing one's intuition through GAMSAT practice exercises.

One of the most important components of passive preparation for the GAMSAT is reading novels

Try to read as much as possible, and make sure to pick up short articles. As you read, make sure to ask yourself: "What is the author trying to argue?"

Another component of passive preparation for the GAMSAT is taking timed mock exams. You can do these with ACER GAMSAT materials or by taking timed GAMSAT mock exams.

The more mock GAMSAT exams you take, the faster you will become at answering questions and reducing the pressure on GAMSAT test day. It is undoubtedly one of the best ways in preparing for the GAMSAT. Make sure you practice under timed conditions as this will really put you under pressure and help you to appreciate the stresses that might surface during test day. You'll also be able to know what your strengths and weaknesses are.

Passive preparation for the GAMSAT will help you score higher and minimise anxiety on test day.

GAMSAT Study Plan To Help You Prepare For GAMSAT

If you're planning on taking the GAMSAT in the near future, it's time to start studying! The best way to prepare for the test is by creating a study plan.

To create your GAMSAT study plan, start by determining your target score. You can then use that number as a guide throughout your preparation process.

Next, figure out how much time you have before your test date and how much time you need to spend studying each week on average. Then, divide this number by seven (since there are seven weeks in a month). This will give you an idea of how many days per week you should be studying when preparing for the GAMSAT.

After this, look at how many hours per day/weekend day you need to dedicate to studying for the GAMSAT in order to reach your target score within this time frame.

Divide this number by 10 hours (since students usually only spend four hours per day studying). This will tell you how many weeks before the test date it is safe for you to begin studying without running out of time.

Finally, divide this number by two days since most people take one day off from studying every weekend. This will tell you exactly when what your GAMSAT study schedule might look like.

A good GAMSAT study plan should also include the following:

  • What’s the purpose of the exam? What will you get from taking it? Having personal affirmations that you read everyday, coupled with a vision board will reverse engineer your mind to set you up for success.
  • Know your strengths and weaknesses. It is important to know what you are good at and what needs improvement prior and during taking the GAMSAT. This will help you focus on your strengths during your study time.
  • Set goals for yourself. Having goals will keep you motivated throughout your study period. You should set goals based on what you need to improve on or what skills you want to develop further.
  • Create a schedule for yourself. Your schedule should include time-frames for different tasks such as reading, writing practice questions etc., so that there is no confusion later on when it comes time to do them in real life!

A GAMSAT study plan should be based on these principles. It should be self-directed, or delivered through a formal plan of attack when you begin your journey to undertake GAMSAT.

  2. Get organized: Before diving into study materials, take some time to organize your resources and goals into a plan that works for you. This way, when it comes time for studying, all of your materials will be at hand and easy to find!

  5. Use past GAMSAT practice papers as practice material
  6. Take mock tests to improve your performance and under time conditions
  7. Find a reliable tutor who will help you with practice tests if you have some money to burn. Just be conscious that not all tutors are the same, so make sure you don't throw your money down the drain.

GAMSAT COVID Precautions

Current COVID-19 precautions for the GAMSAT are subject to change, but currently include:

  • Robust health and safety measures in the testing centers.
  • Masks and social distancing requirements.
  • Limited capacity in each test session.

What to Expect on GAMSAT Test Day

Now that you know how to prepare for the GAMSAT exam, let’s talk about what you can expect on test day. It's important to mention that we recommend you stop studying for a few days before the GAMSAT exam. We recommend you also get a good night's sleep before the exam day and that you pack a uber healthy lunch to bring with you.

How You’ll Feel In the Morning of GAMSAT Exam Day

preparing for the GAMSAT

When you wake up the morning of the GAMSAT, (assuming you were able to fall asleep the night before lol) you might feel similar to how you felt when you've taken other exams or tests. Considering the GAMSAT test has much higher stakes, whatever you experienced then will likely be amplified.

GAMSAT students often feel nervous, jittery, or on edge.

Whatever you do to relax, calm, and ground yourself, plan to do those things on test day. Remember you've been preparing for the GAMSAT and this is your moment to conquer it.

Arrive To The GAMSAT Test Centre Early

To ensure that you are prepared for the GAMSAT exam, remember to arrive at the test center as early as you can. Remember, before you set off to your GAMSAT exam venue, make sure everything’s ready!

The GAMSAT test takes (5.25) hours to complete, including 21 minutes of reading time and 1 hour of recess time. Please plan to arrive at the test centre no later than 8 a.m. and plan to stay at least until 5 p.m.

Leave home early enough to account for any problems that could occur logistically en route. How early you need to leave is dependent on the mode of transport you take, so it’s worthwhile to consider this in advance.

Check for any of the following on the day of your test, as they could cause delays or road closures:

  • Planned construction
  • Marathons, 5Ks, or other races
  • Concerts
  • Major sporting events
  • Other special events
  • Protests
  • Flooding

When you arrive on test day, ideally you’ll have some extra time to sit in the car where you can take a few deep breaths and collect yourself before you enter the testing facility.

You won’t be allowed to leave and come back to your car during the test, so bring any food or drinks into the testing centre with you.

Maybe do a practice run a few days before GAMSAT exam day so that you're familiar with the route.

Make Sure You Have All Your Documents Prior To Arriving At The Exam

To avoid any confusion or issues, make sure you bring all the documentation you need with you. This includes your GAMSAT admission ticket and two forms of identification.

Before you enter the actual testing room, don’t be surprised when you undergo something akin to airport security.

To check for contraband, you might be asked to:

  • turn out your pockets
  • pull your pants up to show your ankles
  • Inspect your hair; they might check a large bun or ask you to lift your hair
  • lift your hood or tie
  • roll up your sleeves
  • Examine your glasses
  • pat yourself down

How You’ll Feel When the GAMSAT Is Over

You might feel exhausted after the exam. You might also feel relief. It’s normal to question yourself and fear that you did poorly.

As we mentioned earlier, studying regularly is key to success on the GAMSAT exam. If you feel like you know the material inside and out, you will be less likely to feel anxious on test day.

In addition, it can be helpful to talk to someone who has already taken the GAMSAT exam. They can give you an idea of what to expect and how to best prepare for the test. Finally, try to relax and stay positive! Remember that everyone feels nervous before taking a big test, but it is important to focus on your own preparation and not compare yourself to other students.
